Description
- It is an Olympic Village district built for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris
- It is an industrial brownfield site
- The planning is inspired by the industrial heritage of the site. The urban blocks are referred to as boats. They are designed as distinct narrow volumes along the riverfront, similar to docked boats.
- The river Seine flows across the site. A ‘city garden’ concept was used to design the waterfront landscape.
- The plan is compact and adaptable. It is designed to be integrated into the surroundings as a residential district once the Games are completed and provide affordable housing.
- The connection to the river is further enhanced by the stepped forms of buildings towards the river. A series of greenways run in between the urban blocks, in the direction of the river. It also serves the practical purpose of creating wind tunnels to channel cool river air inland.
- Several existing buildings on site have been designed for adaptive reuse such as an old electric factory converted into a resident centre.
- There is emphasis on sustainability with the project’s carbon footprint being 30% lesser than average. Wood and recycled materials have been used for construction. The project aims to complement Paris’s Climate Plan for attaining carbon neutrality in 2050.
- The project is being constructed as a living lab of sustainable technologies such as a sidewalk made of seashells, which can allow water absorption. The streets are fitted with sizeable umbrella shaped air filter, which can filter pollutants with low electricity.
- The rooftops are designed as green roofs or with solar panels.
