-The city of Handan, with a population of about 10.5 million people, is the centre of China’s Central Plains economic zone. -It is famous for its cultural heritage and is a center of Chinese industry, under the influence of the Hansteel group. -The project aims to incorporate the site's industrial heritage into a homogenous masterplan. For example, the old industrial roads have been revived to create a new transport network for the area. - Enhancing water features, green spaces, conservation of heritage form the main themes of this project. -The former industrial buildings are being transformed into important cultural and public facilities -The addition of green spaces and landscapes have incorporated the existing trees. The green spaces aim to decontaminate and create a healthier environment in the former industrial area along with a green park running along the length of district. -There would be development of river front region of Qin river and water resources. -The Hotel Metropole concept developed by Dominique Perrault is also integrated with the three main themes. It informs on how urban transformation can be implemented within an existing urban fabric effectively and defines the mixed-use flexible program seen in this project.
