Description
  • It was a temporary village built to accommodate athletes attending the 1932 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles.
  • The village was constructed in a site located in Baldwin Hills, as the site was cooler in temperature compared to other sites. This would enhance the thermal comfort of the athletes residing here.
  • The dwellings were arranged in the shape of an oval, which was shaped like an athlete’s track.
  • The village was designed for disassembly; hence lightweight wooden construction materials were used.
  • Each dwelling was 4x7m and could accommodate 4 participants. They were spaced 3m apart to avoid spreading of fire in case of a mishap.
  • The village also featured amenities such as a hospital, theatre, bathhouses and a 2000 seat open-air amphitheatre.
  • Despite its temporary nature, the village had a well-maintained landscape of flower beds and trees surrounding each dwelling. 24 ha of lawns were also planted.
  • After the Games, the dwellings were dismantled and their building materials was sold and reused elsewhere. No remnant of the village remain on the site today.
