Description
- It was an Olympic Village created to house athletes during the 1964 Olympic Games held in Tokyo.
- The site of the Village was originally an American army housing area called Washington Heights. The existing buildings were recused and new buildings were constructed for the Olympic Village.
- The settlement was demolished after the Games and has been converted into a large central green space called Yoyogi Park.
- The site was easily accessible by various means of public transport such as railways.
- It was a low-rise development landscaped with lawns and trees. Two main residential typologies of housing were 2-storey wooden cottages and 4-storey ferro-concrete buildings. 4 of the concrete buildings were reserved for women.
- Athletes were provided with bicycles and shuttle buses to travel within the Village. A low-speed limit of 30 km/hr was imposed to maintain safety on the roads.
- Village Centres separate for men and women were created to provide communal amenities such as laundry rooms and dining halls.
